Dear BASK friends,
Today, I want us to hold space for what Mother’s Day means because it can be complicated. One of the main driving forces for me to create BASK is becoming a mom. In my motherhood journey, I quickly realized how much more I needed to learn and practice how to take care of myself in a wide variety of ways and why that’s so important. When each and every one of us ( not just moms) regularly takes care of ourselves in the most comprehensive way (showing up for ourselves, being assertive, learning and showing self-compassion, coping with feelings, having and maintaining boundaries, designating and making time for our varied needs, and more), we can truly be our best selves. This is what we, as moms need, and what our families need from us.
Have you all heard the saying, “If momma ain’t happy, then no one’s happy”? I believe this with my whole heart and it’s our job as mothers to prioritize our health, wellness, and peace. No one is going to do it for us. Not only is it important for us to do this for ourselves, but it’s important that our kids have examples of mothers who really know how to truly take care of themselves so they can learn it, instill it from an early age, and prioritize it as a life skill.
Being a mother is the biggest responsibility that brings joy, awe, boatloads of love, heart bursting moments, tenderness, fun, and laughter and also tough feelings like guilt, loneliness, shame, self-doubt, exhaustion, irritability, anxiety, frustration, and sadness. It’s a rainbow of feelings that we are tasked with experiencing and navigating. Especially now with the pandemic, our self-care habits, mindset, and practice, are challenged and more important than ever.
To the moms who have angel babies and to those longing to be moms, and for those who have lost their moms, I know this day can be extremely painful. I hope you take this day to especially nurture yourself and know that you’re not alone.
This day brings up a lot of different feelings for mothers, but also when we think of our own mothers. No matter your gender or role in life, I hope that you’re able to take some time today to think about what being a mother really means to you, whether you got the mothering that you’ve needed or whether you need to take some steps to really nurture and mother yourself.
To my fellow mamas, I hope today that you are able to carve out time to celebrate wonderful sweet YOU.
