Hello BASK friends. As you may know, I am a clinical psychologist and have the privilege to work with men and women who struggle with body image and other concerns. Body image struggles and eating disorders do not discriminate. Let's be real. Men feel just as much pressure as women to achieve or maintain a certain physique.
When I worked at a university counseling center, I developed and ran a body image group, also known as Body Appreciation and Self-Kindness. The participants who attended my group all struggled with accepting their bodies. The stories that they shared were profound, including the one shared by one of my members who worked in a bridal gown shop. She informed all of us that every single bride, no matter her body type or size, apologized for her body when she was trying on dresses. This broke all of our hearts and it emphasized how pervasive body shaming and negative body talk are in our society.
For the month of July, I invite you to join the "BASK Body Positivity Challenge."
